What do we do in Kindergarten?
Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and student assessments are used to guide our instruction.
Reading/Language Arts/Writer's Workshop:
Language Arts: We use Wonders as our language arts resource. Included in this are reader/writer workshop, phonics and phonemic awareness.
Phonemic Awareness: We use Michael Heggerty's Phonemic Awareness flip book each day to work on mastering the phonemic awareness components of the CCSS.
Daily 5: During Daily 5, we choose from the following stations: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, Listen to Reading and Technology.
Orton Gillingham: Kindergarten students begin with identifying letters and sounds, learn to form the letters using a multisensory approach, which leads to the understanding of the rules of words.
Writer's Workshop: We use Wonders and Writing Through the Year as our main writing resources.
Guided Reading: This is a time for your child to read books at his/her level in a small group or one-to-one setting with the teacher. Kindergarten students are expected to be reading at an independent level C by the end of the school year.
Math: We use Everyday Math as our main math resource. We also like to incorporate math stations to really engage in previously taught concepts.
Science/Social Studies: We explore various theme/units throughout the year, using Scott Foresman science materials, Let's Find Out social studies magazines and seasonal units.
